Caffeine vs Decaffeinated.

Nagtalo kami ni papa dahil sa kape. HAHAHA!

Papa: Bukas na ako maggrocery, anak.

Ako: Okay po.

Papa: Wala na din palang mantika.

Ako: Wala na nga po ata. Bili ka na din ng creamer.

Papa: Oh sige.

Ako: Achaka po, kape. Yung hindi decaffeinated ha.

Papa: Bakit yung hindi?

Ako: Eh iba yung lasa ee. Ayoko. HAHA!

Papa: Hindi. Bakit ganun ang iniinom mo? Madami na akong kakilala na nagkasakit dahil hindi decaf ang kape na iniinom nila. Magtigil ka jan.

Ako: (Nagscroll down sa tumblr.) OKAY!

Dahil jan, nag search ako ng pagkakaiba nilang dalawa aside sa lasa.

Decaffeinated Coffee Side Effects

Acidity

  • It is scientifically proved, that coffee is highly acidic in nature and it stimulates the gastric acids to hyper-secrete.
  • However, decaf coffee has been shown to increase the acidity in the body to a much larger extent. This is because, many a times, decaffeinated coffee process is carried out from Robusta beans, which is a type of coffee bean.
  • This acidity leads to, ulcers, acid reflux and can lead to a bigger risk of heartburns than any other fluids. This can be one of the grave effects of decaf coffee. Also, find out what are some of the side effects of caffeine.

Heart Problems

  • Decaf coffee also raises the risk of heart attacks, despite of lower levels of caffeine in the coffee.
  • It is said that drinking decaf coffee, increases the non-essential fatty acids in the blood by about 15% and drives the production of LDL cholesterol. It also raises 8% of the apolipoprotein B, which is a protein associated with cholesterol linked to cardiovascular diseases.
  • When the levels of LDL in the blood increase, there is a bigger chance of heart attacks and cardiovascular arrests. This is definitely one of the fatal decaf coffee side effects, which acts as a slow poison to many caffeine addicts. More on caffeine and blood pressure.
  • The Robusta beans which are used to make decaf coffee, have a higher content of diterpenes. These stimulate the production of fatty acids in the body and thus, increase the cholesterol deposition around the heart.

Osteoporosis

  • According to current research, when you consume a regular coffee drink, there is a loss of almost 5 milligrams of calcium. This can lead to weak bones and development of osteoporosis, which is one of the most severe decaf coffee side effects.
  • Hence, if you have a regular cup of coffee, there can be 300 to 400 mg of caffeine consumed daily, that can double the risk of a hip fracture.
  • Osteoporosis can also occur due to low bone density, which is a result of these chemicals present in decaf coffee.
  • The high amounts of acidity, increase the risk of developing osteoporosis. Some other decaf coffee side effects are Glaucoma, rheumatoid arthritis, organ damage and cancer.

With these decaf coffee side effects, I hope you are convinced to either cut off decaf coffee completely or reduce its consumption. The better replacements for coffee are juices, which are much healthier and recommended by doctors.

Effects of Caffeine

Short-term effects

Caffeine is a drug that has been widely used for centuries. Its main effect is that it is a mild stimulant of the central nervous system (CNS), helping to reduce feelings of drowsiness and fatigue. However, regular use may lead to “habituation”; that is, no net benefit from use but, rather, a negative effect if the drug is not taken.

Besides the above-mentioned CNS stimulant effect, caffeine also temporarily

  • increases heartbeat,
  •  increases the blood pressure,
  • and stimulates the action of the lungs,
  •  increases basal metabolic rate (BMR),
  • promotes urine production, and
  • it relaxes smooth muscles, notably the bronchial muscle.

Caffeine is used in treating migraine, either alone or in combination. It enhances the action of the ergot alkaloids used for the treatment of this problem, and also increases the potency of analgesics such as aspirin. It can somewhat relieve asthma attacks by dilating the bronchial airways.

Too much caffeine can produce

  • restlessness, nausea,
  • headache,
  • tense muscles,
  • sleep disturbances, and
  •  cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats).

Because caffeine increases the production of stomach acid it may worsen ulcer symptoms or cause acid reflux (“heartburn”). Evening use of caffeine may disrupt sleep and cause insomnia.

Caffeine should be used with caution by people with heart disease and high blood pressure (hypertension), and by those suffering from the eye disease glaucoma. Caffeine medications should generally not be used in children. Many children are already consuming significant amounts of caffeine in drinks and food. In this connection, a nutritional concern is that children may choose fizzy drinks in preference to milk, thus getting “empty” calories at the expense of valuable nutrients.

Long-term effects

As already mentioned, some potentially harmful effects of coffee are recognized, particularly for people who should take few or no stimulants. Beyond this however, scientific studies of the effects of caffeine have in general failed to prove negative effects, although some have produced contradictory conclusions. An individual study may produce interesting results which may suggest fruitful directions for further research, but usually it is only when several independent studies confirm one another, and any contradictory results can be accounted for, that one can have reasonable confidence in the safety of a drug — particularly an ” optional” one like coffee.

Although caffeine does not fall into the class of “addictive” drugs, it may be habit-forming. Some people may experience headache, fatigue, irritability and nervousness when their daily intake of caffeine is quickly and substantially altered.

Such “withdrawal effects” may be responsible for confusing results in some studies. There are many complicating factors in long-term studies. One is the familiar “convergence of risk-factors” (e.g. that coffee-drinkers may be more likely to be smokers). Another is that many of the study subjects may deliberately change (or have previously changed) their consumption habits or behaviour, e.g. in response to discovering that they suffer from hypertension. There may also be significant differences in methods of coffee preparation between study populations, or over long periods of time.

Moderate caffeine consumption during pregnancy is generally considered safe. A study has not found any effect on low birth-weight or incidence of premature births. However, although it has been suggested that caffeine may stimulate milk production, cautious mothers may prefer to avoid such beverages during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Furthermore, a large study has not shown any connection of coffee or tea consumption with breast-cancer incidence. Osteoporosis is another condition which particularly affects women. Previous studies have suggested caffeine consumption as a risk-factor, but a recent analysis concludes that such an effect is probably not significant except in conditions of calcium-deficiency, which can be easily corrected.

There is even some actual positive news. The effect of caffeine on the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease, which usually affects older people, has been found to be favourable for men. For women, previous results have been confusing; but a recent study suggests that a crucial factor may be the effect of hormone levels. Often caffeine may have a favourable effect against developing this disease; but when combined with hormone replacement therapy (HRT), it may have a negative one.

One study has found (for women) a strong inverse association between coffee intake and risk of suicide. However, even if confirmed, to determine whether this might be actual cause and effect is, as usual, a much more challenging problem.

Tuguegarao hotel fire, 9 nursing students missing.

Cagayan, Philippines – A hotel in Tuguegarao was reported to have caught by fire before dawn Sunday and nine nursing students were declared missing and may reach to 15 people, who were feared to be dead, according to local news sites.

Apparently, about 50 hotel guests were said to be accounted for after a fire broke at Sunshine Bed and Breakfast Hotel, which is located at 38 Luna Street, Tuguegarao City, in Cagayan Valley.

Tuguegarao City fire Marshall apparently told the news that 9 out the 50 guests are missing and could have died on the fire, which are believed to be nursing students who was scheduled to take the board exams on Sunday.

The fire was believed to have started at the ground floor but reached the 5th floor of the hotel, and most of the guests were sleeping when the fire broke out, reports say.

According to GMANews.tv, a certain Aida Mariano, who is the mother of one of the students named Fatima told them that her daughter called her at around 3 a.m. and said nine of her classmates were trapped inside the hotel during the fire.

Fatima was crying when she called me up. She said nine of her friends did not make it to the door. She was complaining something about locked exit doorways and fire extinguishers that are not working. Please let us pray for them.” Mrs. Mariano was quoted as saying.

Initial reports said that the nine missing students came from University of La Salette (ULS) in Santiago City, in which 6 others were confirmed to have been brought to the nearest hospital

News also said that there were also students from Aldersgate College in Solano, Nueva Viscaya inside the hotel; no reports on what happened to them as of this writing.

Since the cellphone of Fatima was reported to have been sequestered by the exam proctor, the Nursing board was assumed to pursue despite the fire incident.

The fire was said to be called off after 4 hours, and the cause is still under thorough investigation, according to reports.

LOS ANGELES – Dozens of Filipino hospital workers in California sued their employer Tuesday alleging they were the sole ethnic group targeted by a rule requiring them to speak only English.

The group of 52 nurses and medical staff filed a complaint accusing Delano Regional Medical Center of banning them from speaking Tagalog and other Filipino languages while letting other workers speak Spanish and Hindi.

The plaintiffs are seeking to join an August complaint filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in Kern County federal court over the hospital’s enforcement of a rule requiring workers to speak English.

Filipino workers said they were called to a special meeting in August 2006 where they were warned not to speak Tagalog and told surveillance cameras would be installed, if necessary, to monitor them. Since then, workers said they were told on a daily basis by fellow staffers to speak only English, even on breaks.

“I felt like people were always watching us,” said tearful 56-year-old Elnora Cayme, who worked for the hospital from 1980 to 2008. “Even when we spoke English … people would come and approach us and tell us, ‘English only.’” More…

10 Fascinating Flirting Facts.

By Laura Schaefer

So you’ve mastered the art of eye contact and can beckon a romantic prospect with just a few coy glances… but do you really know all there is to know about the fine art of flirting? Just to make sure you’re up to speed, we culled some very surprising information that you can use to your advantage. Read on for some juicy tidbits that may up your meet-cute quotient in no time.

1. Flirting is good for you. Studies show that people who flirt have higher white blood-cell counts, which boost both immunity and health.

2. Think batting your eyelashes is enough? Wrong! All told, scientists say there are 52 “flirting signals” used by humans. Of these, the hair-flip technique is the most common.

3. In some places, flirting is illegal. In Little Rock, AR, an antiquated law is still on the books warning that engaging in playful banter may result in a 30-day jail term. In New York City, another outdated law mandates that men may be fined $25 for gazing lasciviously at a female; a second conviction stipulates the offender wear a pair of blinders whenever he goes out for a walk.

4. Why wait for Friday? Lots of people get their flirt on during their morning commute. A full 62 percent of drivers have flirted with someone in a different vehicle while on the go, and 31 percent of those flirtations, it turns out, resulted in a date.

5. Flirting need not occur face to face. According to the Pew Research Center, 40 percent of people who look for love online say they can easily flirt with someone via email or IM.

6. In the Victorian era, fans were the ultimate playful props that could communicate all sorts of messages. A fan placed near the heart meant “You have won my love.” A half-opened fan pressed to the lips was an invitation, saying, “You may kiss me.” Hiding the eyes behind an open fan meant “I love you,” while opening and closing the fan several times was a chastisement, implying, “You are cruel.” Given how much a fan could come in handy, it’s a shame they ever invented air conditioning.

7. These days, cell phones do the flirting for you. In one survey, half of all mobile phone users have texted flirty messages to keep things interesting while separated from their amour.

8. Watch out; you can overdo it. According to the Social Issues Research Centre, the most common mistake people make when flirting is maintaining too much eye contact.

9. Sometimes, flirty gestures aren’t what they seem to be. Research has shown that men tend to routinely mistake friendly behavior for flirting.

10. Flirting is universal. A woman living in New York City and one in rural Cambodia may not have much in common, but when it comes to attracting a little attention, they both employ the very same move: smiling, arching their eyebrows, then averting their gaze and giggling. Animals flirt, too: birds, reptiles, and even fish have their own way of making romantic advances. The moral of the story: If the simple sea bass can act cute in order to further a romantic agenda, you can, too — so give it a go!

Manila Doctors College on Top! :)

MANILA, Philippines - The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced recently the top-performing schools offering the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs in the country for 2009. These schools  rated higher than 40.70% national passing average set by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the school’s number of exam takers in the 2009 June and November results of the Nursing Licensure Examinations. Among nursing colleges, MDC topped the list with a rating of 69.63%. MDC ranks 3rd among nursing colleges and universities. The top three schools for each range are:

Range 1 (with 1,000 and up takers): Far Eastern University-Manila (NCR) with 1,982 passers out of 2,656 takers or 74.62 percent passing rate; Centro Escolar University-Manila (NCR) with 720 out of 1,002 or 71.88%; Manila Doctors College (NCR) with 704 out of 1,011 or 69.63%;

Range 2 (with 100 to 999 takers), Saint Paul University-Iloilo (Region 6) with 100% passing rate; West Visayas State University-La Paz (Region 6) with 99.48%; Saint Louis University (CAR) with 99.04%;

Range 3 (with 10 to 99 takers), Negros Oriental State University-Dumaguete (Region 7) with 100%; Bukidnon State College-Malaybalay (Region 10) with 100%; University of the Philippines-Manila (NCR) with 100%;

CHED also announced that it will publish the names of the 253 low-performing nursing schools in provincial newspapers. Nursing schools now totals 453 from just 128 in 1991, but many of them lack the required base hospitals, laboratories, equipment and qualified faculty members. Last May, CHED and PRC revealed that there are 147 schools offering nursing program but have performed below the national passing rate of 46.14% for the past five years (2004-2008) in the NLE.

The Manila Doctors College is the educational arm of the Metrobank Group of Companies. Over the years, the College has established a standard of academic excellence in nursing education, consistently posting an above average passing record in the Nurse Licensure Board. Last December 2009, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) pronounced MDC as top 11 among the 419 nursing schools in the country. MDC also offers BS Psychology, BS Holistic Nutrition with Culinary Arts, BS Hotel and Restaurant Management, BS Information Technology, and short courses in culinary arts and caregiving.
